The story behind this piece

A gear train in the manner of Leonardo's mechanical studies: six wheels meshing, each one turning its neighbour the other way, with dashed arrows to show it. The great wheel carries a clock dial in Roman numerals. Nothing here is decoration — every wheel moves another. Keep the wheels turning.
