The story behind this piece
Every panel is computed from the hydrogen wavefunction ψ_nlm: a radial part built from associated Laguerre polynomials, multiplied by a real spherical harmonic, then sliced through the nucleus. Brightness is the probability density |ψ|², gently compressed so the faint outer shells stay visible. Colour carries the sign of ψ, warm where it is positive and cool where it is negative, so every nodal surface shows up as a clean black seam. Count them: each orbital has n−ℓ−1 radial nodes and ℓ angular ones, from the plain 1s to the eight-lobed 5g. Each panel has its own scale bar in Bohr radii, because a 5g orbital is dozens of times larger than a 1s.
