The story behind this piece
Vita is Conway's Game of Life, simulated exactly under two rules. A dead cell with exactly three live neighbours is born, and a live cell with two or three survives (B3/S23). All others die. Bill Gosper's 1970 glider gun, 36 cells and the first pattern found to grow forever, fires a glider every 30 generations, and each glider crawls diagonally at a quarter cell per generation. Around the gun sit named still lifes and oscillators, such as blocks, beehives, blinkers and pulsars. They are placed so that nothing interacts, and the code checks this. The plate shows generation 330. Live cells glow, and each amber trail fades with the generations since that cell was last alive.
